Offerings of flower petals, coffee, and rum sit at the base of the cross of Maman Brigitte, protectress of the cemetery and wife of the spirit Baron Samedi. November 1st and 2nd, known in Haiti as Gede, are a celebration of All Saints Day and All Souls Day. In Vodou, the Gede are the spirits that embody the powers of death and fertility. Practitioners come to the National Cemetery to honor their ancestors and to petition the spirits.
